THE WORKSHOP

Balkans’ and Close East cultures have an extremely intense story of traditional music languages that in the majority of cases, European musicians and people in general, don’t easily have chances to meet with.

 In this course the tutor shares with the students his experience with the Macedonina Gypsy brass bands and the knowledge of some secrets of Balkan music. We will:

  • Select an accessible and various repertoire of different styles from Balkans to Turkey;

  • Teach how to recognize styles and interpret the music;

  • Provide the skills on how to organize musical roles on the traditional brass band

  • Talk about how to approach a world of different aesthetic on a healthy way;

  • Focus on technical elements as ornamentation and tuning in Eastern music;

  • Share the basic rudiments of Turkish modal “makam” system.

Federico Pascucci is an Italian born jazz saxophone player who has dedicated his personal research to traditional music. He lived the jazz music experience through an intense activity of studies and concerts around Europe, based in the cities of Lisbon, Amsterdam and Rome, achieving diplomas from the Academy of Frosinone, Siena Jazz and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.

Now-a-days his artistic work embraces a detailed study of musical styles from Balkans and Asia Minor, that resulted in the Master thesis (at Conservatorium van Amsterdam) “The Saxophone in the Balkans – Roots and secrets of saxophone playing among Macedonian Roma”, collaborations with the Roma bands Kocani Orkestar and Sercuk Orkestar, the Agios Lavrentios Brass Band (Greece), and in the foundation of project as Errichetta Underground (Italy) and Tugoslavic Orkestar (Portugal).

He organizes every year the Errichetta Festival in Rome and is the director of the Roma Balkan Lab Orchestra.
